Chevening Scholarships 2019/20 awards announced

The British High Commission is delighted to announce that 10 Mauritian professionals have been awarded a Chevening Scholarship for the 2019/20 academic year. This is the highest number of Chevening Awards that the
British High Commission has ever offered in Mauritius. The increase is a result of former Prime Minister Theresa May’s pledge to increase the number of scholarships across Africa by 100. The scholarship is awarded to talented
professionals who demonstrate the potential to become future leaders across a wide range of fields. It is fully funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and covers one year of post-graduate studies in a British university. Eight scholars based in Mauritius received their certificates from Deputy High Commissioner
Claudia Garland last week. The two other scholars are based in Rodrigues.

The scholars based in Mauritius are

Anju Ghurburrun

Anju will study for a Masters in Public Policy at the University of Bristol. She holds a Bachelors Honours Degree from the University of Mauritius and works at the Ministry of Gender Equality, Child Development and Family Welfare as an Assistant Permanent Secretary. On receiving her award, she said:- “It is a great honour to be part of such a prestigious community which is Chevening. It regroups like-minded individuals who wish to make a positive change in their countries. This scholarship will equip me with the expertise to contribute to policy making process in Mauritius to address the contemporary challenges in the public sector.”

Antish Kumar Aubeelock

Antish will study an MA Creativity: Innovation and Business Strategy at the University of Exeter. He holds a 1st class honours in BSc Banking & International Finance at the University of Technology, Mauritius and also is a CFA Level II candidate. As a Digital Product & Innovation Specialist at Cim Finance Ltd, he has
worked on several strategic initiatives. On receiving his award he said: “Chevening is one of the most prestigious scholarships in the world. I feel immensely honoured and proud to be part of this community of leaders. The programme at the University of Exeter empower me to innovate and effect real change in society. I am
looking forward to meet inspiring leaders and build long-lasting relationships.”

Bhoumeeta Sneha Ramsohok

Sneha will study for a Masters in Management for Business Excellence at the University of Warwick. She holds a bachelor of technology degree in Production and Industrial Engineering from the Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology, India. She currently works at the National Productivity and Competitiveness council
(NPCC) as a productivity executive. On receiving her award, she said: “I am humbled and grateful to be chosen for the prestigious Chevening scholarship which is a platform for aspiring young leaders like me to grow professionally, academically and to expand my network. I aspire to make a difference in the field of
productivity and business excellence in organisations both at a local level and in the African continent and the Chevening scholarship is a stepping stone for making this dream become a reality.”

Desyrani Rampertab

Desyrani will study MPH in Public Health (International) at the University of Leeds.
She is currently employed at the Ministry of Health and Quality of Life as Physiotherapist/Senior Physiotherapist. On receiving her award, she said: “It is an honour and privilege for me to be joining Chevening’s global community of over 50, 000 exceptional professionals. My MPH Public Health (International) will allow me to engage in pioneering research tackling global health challenges and to be exposed to inspirational teachings on global health. Thank you to Chevening for having awarded me with this prestigious scholarship to study in the United Kingdom.
I seriously can’t keep calm, I have been chosen for Chevening!!!”

Nitin Rughoonauth
Nitin will study for the MA Education (Assessment) at the University College London’s Institute of Education. He is a Research & Development Officer in Educational Assessment in the field of Mathematics and Science Education at the Mauritius Examinations Syndicate. “I’m grateful to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office for this opportunity to study at what is arguably the world’s best institution in the field of Education. The Chevening
Award gives me a chance not only to build strong relationships with leaders in Education in the UK, but to also experience life and culture in the UK, and to join a growing network of influencers across the world. Education Science remains a priority field of specialisation in Mauritius, and I look forward to help build critical
capacity in educational research in assessment in Mauritius on completing my studies, which will help to better inform decisions and improve the implementation and evaluation of Education policy. ”

Nivede Issur

Nivede will study for an MSc in Robotics at the University of Bristol. He holds a Bachelors honours degree from the University of Mauritius in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. After university, he joined Pro-Five Ltd which is a Mechanical and Electrical consulting firm. He has worked on different contruction projects in Rodrigues in the last three years.“I am thankful to Chevening for acknowledging my potential and my ambition for the future development of my country. The University of Bristol is amongst the best universities in the world for studies in Robotics. I will use this opportunity to gather all the knowledge and resources so that I can make a significant contribution in developping this sector in Mauritius.”

Poonyawatee Ramdhonee

Poonyawatee will study the MA-English Language Teaching at the University of Southampton. She is currently an English Language /Literature Educator at
secondary level. Poonyawatee has worked as Research Assistant at the MIE and she has also acted as English Trainer for the U3AM. On receiving her award, she said: “Chevening is symbolic of new avenues that are unparalleled! I am grateful to Chevening and the UK government for this opportunity which will definitely help me
fulfil my wish of giving back the English Language its “Lettres de Noblesse”. This programme will offer me a solid foundation of English Language Teaching Skills and competencies together with effective and new methods of teaching. This will help me improve the standard of English Language in our schools adeptly.”

Prabhu Subramanien

Prabhu will study MSc. in Operations and Project Management at the University of Bristol. He holds a Bachelors Honours degree in Civil Engineering from Anna University of India and was a Gold Medallist for the batch 2006 – 2010. He is a Registered Professional Civil Engineer, currently working as a Senior Executive Engineer at the Central Water Authority. On receiving his award he said: “I am looking forward to master specific skills in operations and project management to support the Government’s objective of ensuring round the clock water supply to the population. I am deeply grateful to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for believing that I have the potential and competences to contribute to the sustainable

development of the country. Chevening – A prestigious once in a lifetime opportunity and I feel privileged to have been bestowed by it.”

2. The Chevening Scholarships programme started in 1984. It was originally called the
Foreign and Commonwealth Office Scholarships and Awards Scheme. A few years
later the name was changed to Chevening – after Chevening House in the
Sevenoaks District of Kent, which is currently the joint official residence of the
Foreign Secretary and the Deputy Prime Minister.
